There are two types of insulin resistance: 1. Metabolic Syndrome Insulin Resistance occurs when we get older and when hormones drop. When hormones drop, this usually causes belly weight, and 2. PCOS Insulin Resistance causes weight gain in the butt and thighs along with many other symptoms.
Some suffer from having both types of insulin resistance, and they will tend to gain weight in the butt and thighs, and belly. Usually, the PCOS weight concentration starts when puberty hits. (Do note that a very small percentage of women do not have the weight factor with PCOS .) But eight out of ten women who have PCOS also have (undiagnosed)thyroid issues.
The thyroid determines your entire hormone and body system and affects how much estrogen, progesterone, testosterone, and Dhea you produce. The dysfunction of hormones that do not absorb into the “cell” are part of PCOS c that causes infertility. In addition, how much of a particular hormone you are producing and how those hormones relate to each other also causes infertility. As a note, 50 percent of women with PCOS do not have infertility, but the other 50 percent do. Some will have cystic acne, and others will not, and so on.
Determining if you have infertility or not depends on how you get tested. For example, your daughter may have infertility. She does not have ovarian cysts, so if a doctor did an ultrasound, he would not find the variances. He would just say, “Oh, you don’t have it.” Not everyone has ovarian cysts. They might have everything else, but not ovarian cysts.
Mood Disorders
PCOS almost always comes with low progesterone. The main reason why women have mood disorders is that when the thyroid is low, and progesterone is low, your body and mind are not working right. I’m talking about real progesterone – not birth control. Birth control has “fake” progesterone in it. Fake progesterone (synthetic) down-regulates your natural progesterone. Unfortunately, the body does not recognize the synthetic to be real progesterone, and the lower your progesterone is, the more mood disorders you will experience. The words used for synthetic or fake progesterone are Progestin, medroxyprogesterone, Provera, hydroxyprogesterone, norethindrone, levonorgestrel, and progestogen. Natural progesterone is a gift from God, and women love it. It is a mood stabilizer. It’s the “Feel Good” hormone.
When women miscarry, they do not produce enough progesterone. A miscarriage is a symptom of low progesterone, and there are several other side effects. Symptoms can include heavy cycles and headaches or migraines that start at the neck base and work their way up to the forehead
Low thyroid causes a headache behind the eyes, like sinus headaches. We have noticed these headaches in our hours of research on the thyroid and treating patients here at the clinic.
PCOS, or polycystic ovarian syndrome, is a hyper insulin issue, and it is the pancreas that is causing the variances. So it is not really an ovarian issue; it is an insulin issue and/or a pancreas issue.
Biggest Challenge of PCOS
The greatest challenge when it comes to PCOS is not getting PCOS treated properly. Even if you are on a good and natural thyroid dose, you would not feel it because of PCOS. In addition, the insulin-resistant part of the PCOS and the low progesterone has to be treated, and if you have infertility, all three of these issues have to coincide.
Low progesterone causes PMS, heavy cycles, low back pain, headaches, migraines, depression with anxiety, and postpartum. In addition, with low progesterone, the slightest trigger can make you angry. All of these symptoms include low progesterone. Therefore, it is extremely important to get the low progesterone plus your thyroid took care of to have a good quality of life.
Low Progesterone and PCOS
There are estrogen receptor sites in your body, and if your body produces a great deal of estrogen, you need progesterone to protect those estrogen receptor sites from becoming oversaturated. The same thing goes for estrogen. Estrogen protects the progesterone receptor sites. Both hormones help each other regulate your body and keep you from mood swings or even breast cancer. However, when a woman gets breast cancer, it is the lack of progesterone, not estrogen, that causes breast cancer.
Women with PCOS have a higher risk of having breast cancer since they do not naturally produce enough progesterone. The sad story is there is no synthetic progesterone hormone to help you.
